Rotary is an organisation of business and professional leaders united world-wide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Rotary was founded in Chicago in 1905 and now has some 1.2 million service minded men and women belonging to over 30,000 Rotary clubs in virtually every nation in the world.
Rotary’s Major Project is to achieve the elimination of Polio world-wide. In 1988 over 350,000 cases of Polio were reported (1000 per day). In 2017 just 22 cases were reported. Only 3 countries (Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan) remain endemic and a major effort is underway to complete the elimination as soon as possible. The good news is that it is nearly a year since the last case in Africa. The bad news is that cases in Pakistan are still occuring. Funds are still required to continue the programme and the Gates Foundation wil treble amounts raised by Rotarians.
The Rotary Club of Margate which has 30 members (both ladies and men), was founded in 1921 and is the oldest club in District 1120 which has 85 clubs covering Kent, East Sussex and parts of London.
