The occasion was attended by members and partners plus representatives from the other Thanet Rotary clubs.
In accepting the role of President for year 2016/2017 Chris congratulated Stephen Askew on leading the club on such a successful past year of activities serving the of local community and supplying international aid via Rotary International.
Chris outlined his programme for the coming year which will include the continued support of the community via the Youth Opportunity Fund which helps young people achieve their aims by offering financial support. The “Swimathon” on October 8th. This event will again be an opportunity for local clubs and organisation to raise funds for their own projects and contribute to Rotary charities. “Thanet Schools Young Artists” competition will again be held in May 2017. Our support of the elderly at Christmas and throughout the year will continue.
The clubs main charities for the year are R.N.L.I. and Global grant support for the Tea Leaf appeal. This to Supply a bus for school children in the tea plantations in Sri Lanka

As an important part of our Rotary Club of Margate’s service to young people in the Thanet community we are offering grants to anyone aged between 10 and 24 years. These grants are entirely free and incur no obligation. They are paid for entirely out of our Club funds, which are raised through fund- raising events and street collections in and around Margate. The size of the grant depends upon the size of the sum needed to support the particular request that you, the applicant, have made. We very much hope that you will allow us to help you in this way.
WHAT WE OFFER: YOUTH OPS (Youth Opportunities)
Grants are made to young people aged from 10 to 24 years, to help enlarge their opportunities in education, the arts, sport, Travel or leisure activities. The size of the grants ranges from £20 to £200. We have helped many young people with the purchase of such things as musical instruments, sports equipment, sponsorship money for youth projects in this country and overseas, and much else.
ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS (RYLA)
These popular and quickly oversubscribed weekends for people aged 14 to 17 are held at the Bowles Rock Outdoor Centre, Tunbridge Wells. They are run by professional instructors and are designed to help the young participants to realise their leadership potential, and we pay the whole cost of the weekend as well as offering a small sum to help with incidental expenses before attending the weekend course.
Grants to organised groups that are seeking to raise money to buy equipment or to offer educational holiday opportunities to young people or to benefit them in other ways . OUR ONLY CONDITION IS THAT GRANTS ARE GIVEN TO YOUNG PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THANET.

The Colyer Fergusson Charitable Trust have a hardship award scheme for young people and the Rotary Club of Margate are their partner for the Thanet area. The awards are targeted at young people within Thanet and other areas considered to be areas of deprivation. The aim is to make small grants of up to £500 available to youngsters aged 14 to 25 details here.
